RRRBBQDay2014_046The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “Blood“.

Owing to having two gigs back to back today, I had to phone the poem in this week.
It took a while to get this one just right

Once again no Ed this week. We all have gigs today…

Blood still marks the hand of Cain
Each of us bears that stain

A river forms from a steady drip
Auschwitz to the Gaza Strip

We loudly condemn: but do we care?
The Congo: Long Tan: Tiananmen Square

We rail against tax hikes: yet barely a squeak
For the women killed by their partners each week

Rivers rise and swell, to flood
Empires, nations, are built on blood

Entitlement: power and greed
For the pride of one, millions bleed

Blood taints our souls and soaks our flags
Robbed of honour they are nought but rags

Blood is blood, whether ocean or trickle
Stars and Stripes or Hammer and Sickle

Defiles our scriptures, gods, belief
Fuels prejudice, hatred, grief

The Somme, Changi, the Timor Sea
From the Trail of Tears to the Kimberley

The flood subsides and memory fades
Obscured by myths and grand parades

We parrot those myths, ignoring the facts
Our nation was born of brutal acts

To us the spoils: the riches and lands
Hey don’t look at me: there’s no blood on my hands
