The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “Family“.

Good afternoon Jon, and for the last time, for a while at least, greetings from Coventry.

I know it’s a very full show this afternoon, so I won’t dally, other than to wish every RRR and Radio Method listener a great Chrissy and New Year, whatever that might mean to you – and a big thanks to Thatch at pretentia.com who has enabled my missives from the other side of the world to go to air each week.

Given it is the last show for the year, I thought I would go out with a bit of correspondence to the chief – haven’t contacted her for a goodly amount of time.

Family

Dear God
I know, it’s been a while, I suppose we’ve both been busy
Don’t worry, I’m not writing because I want something for Chrissy

It’s a hectic time of year, alright: shopping, parties, boozing
It’s just the concept of “family” I find a touch confusing

I get Abraham fathered Isaac who fathered Jacob and all of that
To be honest, I fell asleep between Boaz and Jehoshaphat

But “family” has been hijacked, annexed, held to ransom
Used for everyone from the Mafia to disciples of Charles Manson

Conservatives, traditionalists, the religious coalition
They’ve ostracised too many with their narrow definition

Family: caring, sharing: despite all that comes your way
Respect, support, protection – what matter, straight or gay?

Christmas, a time of joy, be it faith or festive gloss
For others, though, loneliness, a reminder of great loss

At a time, it seems to me, we should strive to be inclusive
Tolerance and acceptance grow evermore elusive

God, you’re the boss: word up the sisters and the brothers
To them you’ve given choice, why can’t they pass it on to others?

My hope is those in power will eventually work out
That values aren’t exclusive to the pious and devout

Angie Hart Poem - Family
There were some technical difficulties getting the poem to air on Sunday ( Jon left the file at home. Jon and Dan eventually got another copy to air later in the show), but Jon asked the ever gracious Angie Hart to step into the breach.
Here is her her poem on “Family”. Its a ripper.
Thanks Angie.
