Bland On Bland – The Book

The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “ Female Sonic Trailblazers “.

JVG has handed over the running of the show to DrPump today. Jon came up with some lame excuse about playing at the Port Fairy Festival.

We reckon he just wanted a lie-in after a big night.

Anyway it’s a ripper theme and gave me a chance to drag out some memories of growing up here in Melbourne.

Great to have Ed in the studio today providing backing on slide guitar, have a listen to how it went below…

Female Sonic Trailblazers

I’m at Lump’s house, doing homework, according to my Mum
Not slinking round city lanes to that cave, The Thumpin Tum

I could usually talk my way in with a denim shirt and banter
Who cares I’m under age? The strongest drink they serve is Fanta

The Tum was small and gloomy, of necessity low rent
All the bands that played there, most just came and went

One evening I was perched by the cigarette machine
Practising the drawback, having filched a Capstan Green

From the stage, a voice erupted: I’d never heard its kind
In four bars, all I thought I knew was left behind

Every note and syllable made to earn their keep
Even spaces forced to simmer, lest they should fall asleep

Eyes, fenced in mascara, enhanced a brooding stare
Face framed with an Afro; more an explosion than hair

As rich as Stringy Bark Honey; the power of a hurricane
As raw and honest as uncut diamond; refreshing as summer rain

Every word an equal, no passengers or mercy shown
Emotions bared, soul exposed, all meat torn from the bone

I saw her again the following week, this time she was one of the crowd
I wanted to tell her I loved her music, but I was young and a bit of a coward

I’d ask her to dance, I was only a lad, the worst she would do was scoff
She gave me a glare like Hannibal Lector and invited me to ‘fuck off’
