The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “I Woke Up“.

Jon and chatted about naps and the changes being back in Australia for 3 weeks cause.

This week I had Ed Bates on backing guitar.

I Woke Up

I woke up to the ocean’s roar
Rolling waves, a distant shore

More comforting than counting sheep
It gently lulled me back to sleep

I woke again: rested, calm
The water’s chant, a soothing balm

It rose in strength: a vibrant din
I reasoned that the tide was in

Then my host enlightened me
This place was four hours from the sea

A river then? A rivulet?
A lake? A swamp? Something wet?

No endless beach or sheltered bay
My ocean was a motorway

My symphony of sounds, aquatic
A pumping V8 automatic

My windswept coast, my salty sailor
Mown down by a semi-trailer

The restful lilt, that once sedated
Now assaulted. plagued and grated

Robbed of sleep: exhausted, numb
Haunted by discordant hum

I struggled now, to take a nap
This drone became my dripping tap

Then, I spied, what made good sense
Graffiti, scrawled across a fence

“Truth is merely what’s believed”
“Reality is what’s perceived”

I lay down and began to dream
Imagining that road a stream

The bitumen, a cool cascade
The traffic noise began to fade

The highway swallowed by the earth
Once again I heard the surf
