Bland On Bland – The BookThe theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “Jones“.

Today we paid tribute to guitarist, songwriter and singer Spencer P. Jones (The Johnnys / The Beasts of Bourbon / Country Killed / Cuban Heels / Olympic Sideburns / North 2 Alaskans / Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls / The Last Gasp / Escape Committee etc) who died last week.

Aptly, today’s theme is ‘Jones’, with contributions from Dr Pump, Davey Lane and an unscheduled and welcome call from Anthony Morgan in Tasmania. If you get a chance have a listen to the 3RRR OnDemand Playback of the show and listen to Jon and Anthony Morgan talking about Spencer. It’s about an hour in and well worth the listen.

Ed Bates provided the guitar backing, have a listen to how it went below…

Jones

The grin, cheeky. Like a schoolboy sprung letting down the tyres on the principal’s car – caught and doesn’t care.

Laconic and affable; engaging

Usually a hat; western – gentleman or gambler, trilby, fedora, flat cap or Greek Sailor.

Smart – very smart; and talent to match; still, not always smart enough for his own good.

Talent overlooked in the mire of commercial pap; a diamond unseen in an ocean of costume jewellery

Understated and undervalued, though not by those who know and appreciate his worth, be it peers or punters; whether festival stages or squashed into the corner of an inner suburban bar – no matter, he’s a giver.

Raw and dirty; wasted and lost; reckless and sparing; honest, sloppy, on occasions and at times agonisingly beautiful.

Songs, lyrics, that will outlive the flesh.

And the grin, cheeky; like a schoolboy who sees the red light and keeps walking.

Wild waters also run deep
