The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “ Origins “.

Arrived back home in the middle of the week and still a bit jetlagged, Jon really decided on an obscure theme this week.
The way he explained it over the plane BEFORE I got on the plane to come home was; the song had to identify where the subject comes from in the first verse. Simple? “There is a town in North Ontario” – Neil Young and …

ORIGINS

To Valerie, Coburg, nineteen seventy two
You won’t recall me but I recall you

We met around midnight in Treasury Gardens
You invited me home, no beg your pardons

Your surname escapes me; if ever I knew it
I was sixteen, not twenty, but I’m sure you saw through it

There was something you needed to tell me you said
A twelve month old son in a cot by the bed

I gave him a bath and dried the young sprat
A boy playing father and a virgin at that

I denied it of course, but you were the first
Doubtless, not best, but I hoped not the worst

I’d sneak off from school, catch a bus then a train
Make my way out to Coburg, change clothes in a lane

Preen my moustache like the late Che Guevara
Bum fluff, braced by my sister’s mascara

Awkward and clueless, the shackles of youth
Not much has altered to tell you the truth

One afternoon I arrived at your place
I sensed some unease by the look on your face

You sat on the couch, furtive and pale
Your boyfriend – Your boyfriend!?!?!?!?! Was due out of jail?!

No need to panic, nothing to pack
Best that I left and well – “Please don’t come back”

I stood on the platform, a storm blowing in
Mascara ran down my lips and my chin

Decades have passed and time’s flown away
My moustache turned ginger, then settled on grey

I hope life’s been good to you and your boy
A few breaks came your way, your share of joy

You won’t recall me but I recall you
To Valerie, Coburg, nineteen seventy two
