The theme for this week’s JVG Radio Method poem is “ Pearls “.

A short poem this week, so a short intro seems appropriate. Jon had organised Barb Waters & The Mothers of  Pearl to play on the show  and  decided that  Pearlsl was a good idea for the week.

Always good to have Ed Bates back on slide guitar backing this week.

Pearls

Aged ninety five, Elsie Bent, departed of this earth
A pair of pink pearl earrings, all she left, of any worth

Her nieces, Gayle and Bronwyn, had long coveted those pearls
While Elsie had long tired of being pressured by the girls

She would teach them both a lesson; though never one to preach
To her nieces’ irritation they were left one earring each

Earrings, as with cufflinks, are no use unless a pair
Elsie hoped her legacy would encourage them to share

Alas, the girls’ belligerence, she underestimated
Each, to spite the other, had one ear amputated

A path, though not intended, Elsie helped to pave
Forewarning to those who seek to dictate from the grave

Her executor remarked on hearing of the news
“I suppose we should be thankful Elsie didn’t leave them shoes”

Earrings shine no brighter than what lies between the ears
Pearls, to the oyster, are nothing more than tears
