Shaking

A scruffy dog outside the pub stood shaking on the mat
He looked so lost and miserable; I paused to give a pat

The day was far from cold; a mild twenty two degrees
I assumed the dog was hungry, shaking to its knees

In my bag a roast beef sandwich I was saving for my tea
I figured the old stray had more need of it than me

I found a seat out on the balcony and bought a pint of beer
I observed the dog stand up soon as anyone came near

He’d shake as they approached then relax once they’d gone by
Lay down on the mat and doze, though he always kept an eye

A tactic he employed not once; time and time again
Rewarded with a tasty treat nine times out of ten

Once his quarry passed the scruff immediately stopped shaking
This knee high Alan Bond wasn’t starving, he was faking

The bloke beside me grinned having seen it all before
“The best fed dog in town” he laughed “only lives next door”

The mutt knew I was onto him; growled and cocked his leg
I swear I heard him humming ‘Ain’t to proud to beg’

He farted, then departed, leaving me to look the clown
He scored my roast beef sandwich; I scored a shaking down
